Grow Instagram followers from comments

A comment is not a follow. Grow Instagram followers from comments by asking non-followers to follow before the link unlocks. People who already follow you get the link on the first tap. HitDM checks Meta’s follow field on Pro. We do not invent a follower count.

How a comment turns into a follow

Grow Instagram followers from comments by holding the link until the person follows you. They comment your keyword, tap in the DM, and non-followers get a follow ask. Followers get the link on that tap. People who ignore the ask never become a follow you can count.

The check uses Meta’s follow field on the messaging profile (is_user_follow_business). If Meta does not return a yes or no, HitDM does not treat that as “not following.”

This is a Pro step, named Growth Gate in the product. Free still sends the link without a follow ask. See Free and Pro pricing. A coach who only needs the booking link can stay on the comment to DM campaign for coaches.

The comment still starts a private DM. The follow ask happens after they tap, on Pro. This screenshot is the product demo, not a follower-count result.

Set the keyword, the follow ask, and the link

  1. Pick a keyword for one offer. Use a word like GUIDE. Skip info and link so random comments do not start the flow.
  2. Say the word in the Reel and the caption. Print it on screen and repeat it as the last caption line.
  3. Send a tap, not the link, in the first DM. The opening message asks them to tap. Followers get the link after that tap.
  4. Ask non-followers to follow. On Pro, turn on Ask for a follow. They follow, tap Following, and then receive the link.
  5. Test both paths. Comment from an account that already follows you, and from one that does not, before you post.

Stay inside Meta’s one private reply per comment for the opening message. Details are in Instagram Private Replies. The follow ask is a later message in the thread, after they tap.

A follow-gate campaign you can copy

These lines are HitDM’s defaults for the “Grow followers from comments” template. Edit them. They are not a client’s Reel. If you want the link with no follow ask, use get more link clicks from Instagram comments.

When the follow check fails

A missing follow field is unknown, not a refusal. Do not write copy that accuses someone of skipping the follow when Meta did not answer.

A reminder is optional and still Pro. It nudges. It does not create a follower. Buying followers, or DMing people who never commented, is a different and riskier tactic. HitDM does not do that.

Mistakes that get you follows you do not want

  • Promising “comment and you will follow.” They choose.
  • Using the follow ask on Free and wondering why the link sends immediately.
  • Hiding a weak PDF behind a follow. People follow once and unfollow.
  • Claiming story replies grow followers here. That template is not live.
  • Counting every comment as a new follower. Count follows, not comments.

Two paths, one keyword

Someone who already follows you should not be punished with an extra follow screen. After they tap, Meta says they follow, and the link DM goes out. Someone who does not follow gets the follow ask, then the button labeled Following. They follow on Instagram, come back, and tap. The optional reminder only fires if they skip that.

The opening line stays the same for both people. Changing the first DM based on follow status would mean an extra Graph call before Meta’s one private reply, and a wrong guess if the field is empty. The split happens after the tap.

Write the caption so the deal is obvious. A line like “Comment GUIDE and I will DM the page after you follow” sets the expectation. A line that only says “comment GUIDE” and then surprises them with a follow wall creates unfollows, not fans.

What to put on the Reel

Put the keyword on screen for the last few seconds, in the same spelling as the automation. GUIDE and guide match. GUIDE and GUIDES do not, unless you add both. Say the word out loud once. End the caption with the comment instruction, not a paragraph of hashtags above it.

Keep one offer on that Reel. A follow gate in front of a checklist, a calendar link, and a discount code makes people follow for the wrong file. When the offer changes, change the keyword. Leave the old post on the old word so old comments still resolve.

What you can count

Count three numbers, separately. Comments that matched the keyword. Taps on the opening button. Follows you can see on the account, plus link clicks after the unlock. A comment is not a follow. A tap is not a follow. A click after the unlock is not a follow either.

HitDM does not publish a follower total for you, and this page will not invent one. If the follow field comes back unknown, the link still sends. That person may already follow you. Do not subtract them from a “blocked until they follow” report you do not have.

Story replies are a different trigger and they are not in this template. A comment on a post or Reel is the start. If you need the link with no follow ask, stay on Free and use the instant-link template instead of turning the gate on and then arguing with it.

FAQ

Does commenting automatically make someone follow you?

No. The comment only opens a DM. HitDM asks non-followers to follow, then sends the link after Meta reports that they follow. People can ignore the ask.

Is the follow ask on the free plan?

No. Ask for a follow (Growth Gate) is a Pro feature. Free still sends the link from a comment keyword without a follow check.

What if Meta cannot tell whether they follow you?

An unknown result is not treated as “not following.” HitDM does not block the link when the follow field is missing.

Turn on one follow gate this week

Pick one keyword and one URL. Turn on Ask for a follow only if Pro is the plan you are on. Comment from an account that follows you, and from one that does not, before you post the Reel.
